Local nanoscale heating modulates single-asperity friction.

We demonstrate measurement and control of single-asperity friction by using cantilever probes featuring an in situ solid-state heater. The heater temperature was varied between 25 and 650 °C (tip temperatures from 25 ± 2 to 120 ± 20 °C). Heating caused friction to increase by a factor of 4 in air at ∼ 30% relative humidity, but in dry nitrogen friction decreased by ∼ 40%. Higher velocity reduce...

FULL CRITICAL REVIEW In situ single asperity wear at the nanometre scale

The interface of two contacting materials experiences complex physical and possibly chemical reactions when one slides with respect to another. While tribology, a subject studying sliding contact, has been comprehensively elucidated for a variety of materials ranging from metals, carbides, inorganic materials and polymers, direct imaging data of the processes taken place at the nanometre or ato...

A molecular dynamics study of scale effects on the friction of single-asperity contacts

A micro-mechanical dislocation model of frictional slip between two asperities was presented by Hurtado and Kim [1], which predicts that the friction stress is constant and of the order of the theoretical shear strength, when the contact size is small. However, at a critical contact size there is a transition beyond which the frictional stress decreases with increasing contact size, until it re...

Single asperity tribochemical wear of silicon nitride studied by atomic force microscopy

Nanometer scale single asperity tribochemical wear of silicon nitride was examined by measuring the wear of atomic force microscope tips translated against a variety of substrates in aqueous solutions. We show that the chemical nature of the substrate plays an important role: significant wear was observed only when the substrate surface is populated with appropriate metal-hydroxide bonds. Mica ...

Temperature dependence of single-asperity friction for a diamond on diamondlike carbon interface

A variable temperature, ultrahigh vacuum atomic force microscope AFM was used to characterize interfacial friction for a single-asperity diamond contact on a diamondlike carbon DLC substrate over a nominal substrate temperature range of 90 to 275 K. Calibrated friction force measurements were obtained by analyzing lateral force hysteresis loops as a function of normal force. For sufficiently la...
